This is another classic for an ES forum, so i'm starting this one too.
Oblivion: what do you think about it? Due to some limitations of my computer, i can't play the game yet; then my opinion on it will be very short and incomplete... Since it's based only on some video - demos, some screenshot, a pair of review read on magazines, chatting with other ES fans. That's all.
But why don't write something about it? So i'm ready to go.
Like everyone, two years ago i saw the first images of the new game, and i was absolutely amazed: never seen a graphic like this! "This will be certainly an excellent game", i tought. Then i saw the demos, and i was amazed another time (except for the requirements, naturally... But this is the price to pay for a next gen game!).
And now, when the game is out from some months, the community seems disappointed about it...
Oblivion seems to be a pretty bugged game: i believe in what other players says, so i think that probably it needs some major and minor adjustements. And the localizations are something horrible, especially here in italy... Even if i can speack and understand english quite good, in my opinion play an RPG in the player's mothertongue increase the realism, even if don't help you in learn another language, of course.
But... Is this game really so bad? Even if is very different from Morrowind, even if aren't spears in it, even if aren't Silt - Strider, even if aren't a thousand of other things we have loved in Morrowind? I actually haven't read any good Oblivion review.
I arseume Oblivion like a new start, a brand new adventure who have anything related to the past Elder Scrolls games; so i don't think very much about what i don't will find in it... (possibly high - end, since i'm bored of crashes!). When finally i will be able to afford a new computer, i will look at what the game has to offer, without looking at the past.
That don't means that i think about Oblivion like at a perfect game, of course...
Because now i'm thinking : "which is your opinion?"

personally i like it alot better than morrowind..... for the few weeks i did play it it hardly ever crashed on me unless i did something stupid (like trying to loot the corpse of a summoned creature...yeah that didnt work too well) i think the game is just fine without mods...whereas i cant play morrowind a few minutes without mods...i dont think im going to get any for oblivion for a long time.... now dont get me wrong i like all the mods for oblivion...the quality of them is incredible...but i personally like oblivion just the way it is...and i've messed around with morrowind alot and i had problems because of that and i dont want to mess up oblivion too...so im just gonna leave it alone and play it straight out of the box the way it was intendedand i will be content with what the game producers gave us...unlike most everyone else in the entire ES community...no offense but apparently people aint happy with an awesome game that has a few bugs that can easily be avoided or overlooked...its a game...not national security or something that has and incredible amount of preasure to be perfect...like i said..its just a game....
anyways...if you think thats a rant...sorry but i needed to say that cause im sick of people complaining about oblivion

I think you're right!
As i told, i think Morrowind it's still an awesome game to play: i haven't seen another RPG interesting like it yet... And that's the reson because i made this board.
But Oblivion is a good game too, and i'm sure of that, even if i haven't still played it... Even if it missed spears, crossbows and Silt Striders (by the way: but... are Silt Striders Cyrodiil's residents creatures? No! And then where is the problem?).
For me, Oblivion is just a new start, a new story, with anything related to the past ES chapter, even if in Oblivion you can find a lot of recalls to Morrowind.
It has disturbing bugs, but also Morrowind has: wonderful ame, but i have screwed up it a lot of times... Oblivion seems have fixed many doubling issues and such!
That's a good thing indeed.
...And no, i don't assume your last sentece as a rant, eh eh.

I tried my hand at Oblivion for some days and I postponed playing it for a while. Whilst my computer is fairly well equipped for Morrowind to allow for a really smooth playing experience (Athlon 2.4 GHz, 660 megs RAM, Radeon 9800 pro), I have to tune lots of details down with Oblivion. So I will refrain for a while till I can afford a better machine.

I have played with OB, finished it all in less than a week as some know. I truly loved all the graphics in the game but have not played it lately.
I do miss alot of things from MW etc, the throwing weapons, the old telekinesis, as well as some other things.
I hate all the voice acting, as well as some of the journal stuff from the old MW dealing with topics, (searching through them). I also hate hearing birds but never seeing any. Must be due to no levitation which I also miss a lot, as I like to fly around. No slow fall either.
Enjoyed the horse riding better in OB than what was available from mods to MW.
Other than this, I can say for myself that, they went from a great PC game to a console game, which I don't play but my son does.
Glad to see your forum up Osiris, will be checking in as time allows.

yeah that is one thing that i miss from morrowind...levitation...but i like the fast travel in oblivion SOOOOO much more than morrowind: 1) its free 2) you can leave from anywere on the map 3) you have way more destination choices
and that i fell makes up for the missing levitation for me cause thats all i used levitation for was traveling over mountains
and i LOVE the oblivion combat WAY more than morrowind...the combat bored me after a week....ugghhh but i loved the morrowind storyline..but i dont know anything aout the oblivion storyline (i havent even gotten to kvatch lol!!)

When i first got it, my computer was below specs, but after some tweaking i made it run, sorta. It never crashed but was way too slow to fully enjoy. combat was a clickfest worse than morrowind because the framerate was so bad, at least in morrowind i could keep them in front of me and dodge their attacks.
i made a sword model and plopped it in the game, just to see if i could, then I converted some of the oblivion weapons into morrowind, I paid $50 for it I'm going to at least enjoy some of it.
Now I've got a new machine, specs are in that thread, and while I do miss many of the things morrowind had, i still like many of the things Oblivion adds.
Oblivion IMO balances out between stealth, combat, and magic better. The AI while not perfect is better than morrowinds. It could use more dialogue but sound files, even compressed MP3's take up space, and they had to fit it on one DVD.
Morrowind is Oblivions biggest *arseet, and it's biggest curse, a double-edged sword if you will. You can't help but compare the two and be impressed and disapointed at the same time.
But in the end it's a great game that doesn't neccessarily need mods, though i first played morrowind on xbox and didn't even know tribunal and bloodmoon existed and loved it so much i bought the PC GOTY, and now I'm here.
Theres a lot of people that claim essential mods for it, but i would say the only really essential one is the Vanity Camera Smoother, unless you don't look at yourself, then maybe not.
Or if you have a slow machine like i did, theres certain mods that would be essential to make it playable, but if you have a machine it was designed for then no.
I'm running very few mods, I could live without them, but enjoy them because i can.
* that's not a typo above, the darn cencor did it, see: arseet arsearsein comparse comparseion

Well, I played Oblivion and it's a great game. Unfortunately, it's nowhere near as big and as involved as Morrowind. The quest lines are shorter, the fencing quests are too easy, there are far fewer guilds and the monster/loot levelling (bandits in Daedric? 1st-level vampires?) are ridiculous. That said, the combat is more involved, the graphics are massively better and the new functionality is very nice.

Hey Osiris!
Long time no see. I got your email and thought I would drop in here. Originally I was going to post something off topic, but then I thought, what the hell, I've played this game, so I might as well contribute!
I hadn't played a RPG since Ultima 7, but what attracted me to this one was the open-ended play, just like in U7. Obviously the level of detail in the game and environments is so much more immersive than it was 10 years ago. And overall I liked Oblivion as much as I liked U7, even more so when it came to just appreciating the depth of details in the landscape, lighting, and sounds. Overall Oblivion is one of the most enjoyable games I've played in a long time.
Unfortnately it also takes lots of time. I only made it to level 3 and up to the point where I was in search of that stolen amulet when i quit. It was just too time consuming. So here are a list of the things I think they should improve on in the game.
- there should be an optional "abridged" version of the storyline for people like me who want to play a game for 10-15 hours and be done with it.
- they should have hired more voice actors. Everyone sounds the same!
- they should have invested in giving each character more intelligence-. I quickly tired of hearing the NPCs repeat themselves over and over.
I could have made this list longer, but it has been a good 6 months since I played oblivion, and I can't remember what my other gripes were. So that is it! Nice forum! Ciao.

I'm very glad to have you at my forum, and i'm glad you like it. But still we miss one person... Eh eh, you know who i mean. Enjoy the board and feel yourself at home. So you played Oblivion? That's another surprise, and that's a great one too, i created a new TES addicted!!! ;D I hadn't played a RPG since Ultima 7, but what attracted me to this one was the open-ended play, just like in U7. I could have made this list longer, but it has been a good 6 months since I played oblivion, and I can't remember what my other gripes were. So that is it! Nice forum! Ciao. Basically, i agree with two of the things you're pointing out: voice acting and AI should be better, it's a pity that a game like Oblivion suffer of this kind of bugs, really. (well, if many persons rants about Oblivion's voice acting and Oblivions RAI, i can't not believe 'em...) What i disagree it's about an optional abridged version of the game: c'mon, Wlder Scrolls games are so famous because they are literallty infinite, and you would an Oblivion who ends in 10 hours? Naaah... We like it in this way! Figure it out, Oblivion is at the moment stillshorter than Morrowind: i spent mounths on MW, and still i haven't finished the main quest! But i really enjoyed the game greatly, it is really an awesome experience for me. Well, can't wait to play this damned Oblivion!

Oblivion hasn't seemed, to me, to have many bugs; in my experience there's just a few very minor things like the horse occasionally abandoning you.
Overall it's a great game, though it suffered from the developers' unfortunate -- but probably necessary -- decision to scale back the Radiant AI to the point that there's little 'AI' any more; most behavior is goverened by schedules and AI packages -- and AI packages are essentially scripted actions. You'll see a little decision-making based on a character's attributes such as confidence, aggression, responsibility, etc.
But Radiant AI would have really made the game much more remarkable and ground-breaking, and I think it would have been their biggest achievement had they been able to implement it. But finally there were just too many cases where NPC's would make decisions that could break the game, such as one NPC killing another NPC for some reason or other, and the now-dead NPC was needed for a quest. Or a chain of events causing all the guards in a town to go chasing someone. I imagine that the Radiant AI may have been part of the reason for the delayed release of Oblivion, though I don't know that.
Voiced dialogue had the unhappy result of significantly reduced dialogue compared with Morrowind. While the reduced dialogue is unfortunate, they'll have to hold to this voice standard now that they've set the standard for themselves. Perhaps they can someday synthesize high-quality, human-sounding speech at least for miscellaneous characters like general town residents.
Overall I'm greatly enjoying Oblivion, and enjoying modding for it.

I was enjoying oblivion and I noticed a bug in the daedric shrine of Clausis Vile which will freeze a consol game. I only have oblivion for the consol but I think its a great game.

Time flies when you're having fun... I have been playing Oblivion for 1 1/2 years now, first the German version, then the English. And I must say: it was "love on second sight". First I played around and thought "well... it's ok, but I like Morrowind better", and I returned to Morrowind. After a while, maybe some months, I gave it another try - and this time I liked it much better and I kept on playing nearly every day since then. There are some things I really enjoy, for example NPC have daily routines, shopkeepers close their shops and go to a tavern to eat in the evening, everyone goes to bed and sleeps at night (except of the nightwalkers of course ). Horse riding is great - even though I am not very talented with it. ;D You can even ride a unicorn! And of course the graphics are phantastic!! The chargen is one of the things I like most! You can create every face you want, young or old, pretty or ugly, friendly or mean... creating characters is so very interesting! I don't like the mainquest, started it a few times, but never finished it, and I think I never will. There are many sidequests I can do (but not as much as in Morrowind), you can join the mages-, fighters- and thievesguild and explore many places. Shivering Isles is a phantastic AddOn, really wonderful, with a great sense of humour. The modder community is growing, the mods are getting better and better. There are so many new races, houses, armor, weapons, clothing, places, companions, quests, complete game-overhauls and much more out now. Today I really like playing Oblivion and I think it has the capability to become a classic, it is already a long runner.

I played OB for a few months, did my best to force myself to enjoy it, and succeded in doing so now and then....
Then I grew tired of it and never returned, and I have no will to do so either....It's about as tempting to play OB as it is getting my teeth pulled
(I could go into the thousands of details of why I don't like OB, but nobody would bother reading)

Well, give it a try and post the ~10 most annoying things for now. I am very interested to learn why people like or dislike Oblivion. As I said: first I did not enjoy it too much, but that changed. There are still some things I don't like, but I can live with them.
