Here's a little hint my breton character discovered:
It appears that centuries of unlife make liches depend on their magickal staff. I don't know if it his a remnant of their past existence as brilliant necromancers or unlucky mages, or if the staff finally become the source or the symbol of their power but a lich whose magickal staff has been destroyed by a spell is highly bewildered and enter in some kind of catatonic state, being suddenly unable to cast offensive spells or move.
Mostly, they stay immobile only mumble cast of conjuration to protect themselves with skeleton servants.

You've found an interesting tweak, Not Quite Dead (sorry for the late reply... But i was "mumbling" like the above liches, probably!)! Even if i still don't play Oblivion (yes, i've repeated that about 100 times, sigh), i like to know new kind of tricks and strange things about the game, so please keep on reveal us them when you find some . You talk about a broken staff: then the player is able to break weapons thanks the Havock? That would be really great if correct, i heard of many people around who complaints about the Oblivion's phisic engine limitations... Maybe they're wrong? Back to topic (liches who turns in salt statues), well, i would think that the staves have a script attached and, for some strange reasons, if you break it you break the whole creature's animations / AI, or something like that. But i'm absolutely no expert in that kind of topics, so i "left the ball to who knows about it more than me" (as we use to say here in Italy). Have you found in the CS if you can unequip the staff from the lich - creatures?

Hello Osiris. Hem! Looks like it's been quite a long time I haven't come back around here... To answer at your questions: 1) When I speak about "breaking liches' staves", I mean breaking them by using a spell (whose already existed in MW, if I'm not mistaken): Disintegrate Weapon. It damage the "health" of the weapon. Once the health of the weapon reach zero, the creature/NPC simply drop its/his/her weapon and the broken weapon can't be used as long as you haven't repaired it. 2) After reading your answer, I had a glance in the TESCS2, although I don't know how to handle it. I noticed among the fight styles, there's a little something named "common lich style" or something like that. Maybe this is the reason of that strange behavior I only encountered with those creatures...

another method of removing the liches staff is, once you become a journeyman in a particully weapon skill, you can perform a sideways power attack with a chance of disaming your target: ie you make them drop their weapon, and to date i have never seen them try to pick it up, once i disarmed a guy, picked up his own sword and killed him with it...fun fun fun
