I have a problem with my Windows Media Player 10: it no longer plays any audio file, nor it plays the audio of video files. The video is ok (audio absence apart), but when i try to play audio files Windows says that there's a problem with the audio card... That is not completely true, as my audio card works perfectly with other media players (Real Player, Winamp, Zoom Player, etc.).
So i guess that some vital Windows file has been damaged or missed... Reinstalling Windows Media Player doesn't fix anything. Then it should be a software problem, but which one? How could i fix it without reinstalling Windows XP from scratch?
If you have experienced a similar problem and had the hang of it or if you know other websites that would offer a solution, please post about it here.

Have you tried reinstalling your version of DirectX? From what I have heard, WMP uses Directsound which may not be used by other applications and so it may not give sound even if other apps can. Don't know if this will help but it may be worth a try.
Since the other apps are working, I would think the sound card drivers are fine as you say.
Don't know what else may help except possibly a repair on the OS or an upgrade to WMP 11.

Reinstalling DirectX doesn't fix the issue, even because dxdiag says that everything is going well and there aren't missed files (dxdiag sound tests worked very good); nor upgrading to Windows Media Player 11 solve the problem, as this is due to the OS itself and not to the player...
You can't 'repair' XP as you do with Windows 98, when the system no longer works you can only format the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch.
