Well N'Vidia brought out their most recent GPU the G92. It's first product is the GeForce 8800GT. What is interesting is that the 8800GT is actually faster than the older 8800GTS (which sounds weird from the naming). It is also less expensive than the 8800GTS. Its price is about $250 but will probably settle down to $220 or so once the early intro euphoria wears out in a few weeks.
So if you were planning on getting a 8800GTS, you may want to save some money and get the faster 8800GT for less.

Thanks for posting about this, Nostra! A new card can be a good present for the upcoming Christmas, i think that many persons will like the idea; also, the prices you have listed are quite similar to the ones that we will have here in Italy; pity that as usual i will have to change my Motherboard first... My computer is getting quite old.

pity that as usual i will have to change my Motherboard first. Yeah you and me both. My PC has been sadly sitting without parts for almost a year ever since I gutted it to make my wife and son's system. No MW for almost a year! Arrrgh! Gotta build it back. There are some really nice motherboards available for both AMD and Intel systems. NVidia 590 chipsets are pretty nice for AMD AM2 processors and NVidia 680 or Intel P35 chipsets are nice for Core systems. Maybe see if there is a sale that comes up and get one. Will probably have to get a processor with it since the old socket mobos are hard to find these days. Intel is supposed to have another price change in January but it will probably be for high end processors. Once K10 comes out for AMD, it may make Intel's prices more competitive. As for the graphics boards, NVidia will probably come out with other boards based on the G92 chip so I can wait. Also ATI should have their own counterpart board out soon so that should continue the price wars. None of my games I want to play are all that graphics intensive and I have a cheapo screen so I think I am fine with my graphics card for now...so long as I can get my PC running again.

Very impressive indeed, but i'm thinking about how many people can afford a very expensive monitor, or better how many people plays videogames on such big monitors actually...

Very impressive indeed, but i'm thinking about how many people can afford a very expensive monitor, or better how many people plays videogames on such big monitors actually... The thing that really impressed me about the numbers was how high a frame rate the 8800GT got on OB even with such a huge monitor. OB was such a graphic resource hog just a while back and the new cards have no problem playing the game. Of course the new games like Bioshock and Crysis have way higher requirements than OB so I guess the games have evolved with the hardware.

I guess the games have evolved with the hardware. Yes of couse; i guess that consumer electronics (and then even computer hardware) evolves every six months; the 8800 will be quite old in just half year... replaced by a better model. Off Topic: i know that you're playing Oblivion, why you don't post some screenshots? Would be interesting to have a look at the latest hardware capabilities (ven if you don't have an 8800 GT!)!

Actually OB is the one game I don't have. Got a pile of others that I haven't even played but seem to buy on some sale or another. I haven't even been able to play MW for awhile (like close to a year ). I cannibalized my rig to make my wife's and son's system and due to one thing or another, I never got around to rebuilding it until now. I am right in the middle of the rebuild/overhaul and just ordered a E2160 ;D . It just came in today so I am thrilled. I expect my motherboard will come in tomorrow as well as a few other knickknacks. Then at least I can get it to run. Still don't have a DVD burner though so that is on the "things to get list". Once I have that, a fan controller panel and a multi card reader panel, I should be able to get back to playing MW all over again, and hopefully some of those stupid games that are piling up on my shelf. After that, I also have to connect up my wife's new TV tuner that she ordered. Never done that and it seems a bit tricky (especially the digital QAM stuff). Hope to have that up and running by early next year so that she can start transferring all her VHS stuff to DVD as well as watch TV on her monitor. I also have to upgrade my daughter's emachine so I probably won't have time to play much of anything besides MW until all of this is done. Most of her upgrade parts have been ordered. Still need to get her a decent power supply and then when she has some spare time, do the swap. BTW, I am looking forward to seeing what will come out in the lower end spectrum for the G92 chip. If that comes out before the next time I buy a vid card, I may skip the 8600GT all together to go for the next gen.

That was for someone I was talking to on another forum. He was asking about fairy wings for his companion on OB and I suggested he look at Floydian's thread here. He registered here and now has wings on his companion. I am not sure if he is even playing the game still.
