Well Intel has come out with their newest Pentium chip that is based on the Core architecture and not the Netburst architecture. They are the E2140 and E2160. In some ways this is a marketing strategy to name a Core chip Pentium but besides the name the important factor is the price. It is the first Intel dual core Core architecture below $100.
The CPU is an Allendale design similar to the E4300 but is lower in fsb and level2 Cache. As such the base performance is fair. XBitlabs wrote an article on the chip.

In the important area of gaming, these chips did better than their Pentium D cousins but fared worse than even the lowest Athlon X2 (the 3600+). Its a slight step up from the older Netburst Pentium chips (though most likely much cooler in operation).
However, when overclocked, the chip kicks butt. At 3.4Ghz (which I should note is a pretty severe overclock) it can beat the performance of Intel's $1000 E6800 Extreme Conroe chip. No Athlon comes even close to the Intel Extreme at this time. Most will not take their chip to 3.4Ghz but even at 3 Ghz, which is a pretty standard oc, its a decent performer.
So it seems that at stock speed, you might as well get an AMD chip since they are still cheaper, run cooler and perform faster. However if you are looking for a really cheap pocket rocket to oc, this chip is something to consider. In either situation if you are an Intel fan and want a cheap dual core chip, this one is a good option and there is no reason to buy the Pentium D anymore.
Egg has the E2140 for $81.00 at this time.
