How can I get this LCD monitor calibrated right??
The monitor is a 22" Acer AL2223W. Out of the box, it was really a little too bright. Everything looked great, just too bright.
I have an Nvidia 7800GTX card. I used Nvidia's display optimization wizard (several times), and it walks you through FIRST setting your monitor's brightness and contrast both to 100%, then steps you through adjusting the brightness somewhat, then gamma levels, etc. Note that it doesn't prompt you to make any changes to contrast, which is therefore left at 100%.
Afterwards, dark areas are too dark and light areas too bright. I've run the wizard a few more times, fiddling with settings. Never can seem to get it right. I'm not picky about these things -- never had to really make much adjustment on monitors before.
Surely there's a better way. If I do modding with my monitor not set up properly, then interior lighting won't be right for everyone else!
Help!

I use Adobe Gamma , but it comes only with Photoshop so you can't have it for free. But what about this tool and this web page ? Also, i think that just googling "monitor calibration" will give you many links to freeware softwares.
