So, Microsoft has released its new OS, "Windows Vista". It contains hundreds of new features; some of the most significant includes an updated graphical user interface (GUI) and a brand new visual style dubbed Windows Aero, improved searching features, new multimedia creation tools, and many other new stuff. Maybe, an improved state of security as well (though i still doubt of that...). So my question is: are you interested in the new OS? Are you going to buy it? Or are you no longer interested in "Uncle Billy"'s stuff? Talking about me, i'm going to reply that i will buy it, but not now: still too busy with my old dear XP to switch to Vista so soon!

When XP crashed recently (again!) I began seriously considering getting Linux. Already installed AbiWord and altho it doesn't have all the features of Word, it seems to work fine. (it's compatible with Word too.) The best part is that it's FREE. I do like XP better than any other MS operating system so I will probably stay with it until I upgrade my comp. Then maybe I'll switch to Linux or even buy an Apple.* I've noticed that a majority of the people who visit my blog now use Firefox2 instead of IE - which wasn't true a year ago. So more and more people are looking for a better alternative. I understand that even Microsoft uses Linux on their servers in Redmond rather than their own XP. What kind of company would sell software to the whole world and then use another software themselves because it's more stable? The winds of change are a'blowin' and I think MS will fnd itself challenged mightily in the next decade by open source products. But I haven't used VISTA so don't know for sure. ~m *I was impressed by Stevel Wozniak when he appeared on TV interview recently. He said his intention was to build the best operating system in the world. And he feels happy with what he produced. Can you play Elderscrolls on an Apple, btw?

Microsoft runs their own OS's on their own servers, but I've read that they do utilize a third-party service that uses Linux as a sort of front-end to their webservers.
What I've read is that DNS requests for "www.microsoft.com" don't resolve to machines on Microsoft's own network, but instead are handled by the Akamai caching system, which runs Linux.
Akamai runs a service to help boost Web site performance by caching copies of Web sites on many servers in many locations. This creates many individual targets for attackers instead of one target.
Therefore Akamai can help defend against denial-of-service attacks by spreading the attack among many servers. Just as a distributed denial-of-service attack enlists large numbers of systems to attack a single server, Akamai presents a distributed defense against attacks.

Since I am a lazy fool, I don't really know at this time. I think I will get it when it becomes too painful to run XP. Until then, I guess I am fine running MW on XP. My next big milestone will be when I buy OB! Then I can load intrepid's cool houses! At this time, that's more interesting than Vista to me.

Can you play Elderscrolls on an Apple, btw? Unfortunately, no. There are so many differences between Macintosh and Windows, and Morrowind and Oblivion are actually released only for Microsoft operating systems (i am not talking about consoles, of course); also, Macintosh is not oriented in gaming as Windows... It's more an OS for graphic designers, musicians and so on. So the short reply is no, you can't run an ES game on Macintosh. But Apple has recently switched to Intel CPUs, so maybe things will change in the future... And i am very sure that Bethesda will port Oblivion on Vista as well as they recently did that for the Playstation 3, too.

I think the new Macs that can run Windows Apps may be able to run OB. Not sure though. By the way, Meadowfae, your XP crashed again?

I think the new Macs that can run Windows Apps may be able to run OB. Not sure though. Right; remember that you will need a compatible software as well and not only a compatible Macintosh (at least i suppose; i'm not a tech genius at all...). If the new Macs will have a great success, Bethesda would be obligated in porting Oblivion to Apple... But i doubt of that as well as you, Macs costs lots of bucks.

But i doubt of that as well as you, Macs costs lots of bucks. I hear that. I really like Macs but their cost/value is awful. I had a G4 and it was nice when it was new, but I recently looked at a simple CPU upgrade for the thing and its a whopping $250 just for the stupid CPU and not a fast one at that. And forget about a Mobo upgrade. Macs are made to be used and then thrown away after about 3-5 years if you want to stay updated with the new software. Thats too expensive for me.

I meant that this most recent crash was the second time - XP also went down in May of 06. [partly due to a virus infection while I was on vacation for 2 weeks - my avg expired. That'll teach me to sip lemonade in a hammock by the sea.) So far everything's running smoothly...MW only goes up to 61 C now instead of 75C. Not optimum, but somewhat improved. ~m ... Thats too expensive for me. Sigh..me too. Guess I'll have to keep making 'Uncle Billy' rich. ~m

Merged the two posts. 'Uncle Billy'... Yes, too bad that we will have to keep making Bill Gates so rich; i would live in a world where gamers can freely choose between different operating system, but alas that's still a mere utopy actually. So you're right Meadowfae. By the way, i'm actually googling "Windows Vista" looking for some good site or blog against Gates' Empire (so to share some new opinions), funny that i don't find any single english article that shows Vista's defects: it's actually a 'glorify feast' pretty much everywhere actually, so i guess that Microsoft has monopolized the web as well now. I will try that OS one day, but i would less web - advertisement as well.

Osiris - my search on Google using Fred Langa /Vista keywords came up with this useful PC World article in English comparing the pros/cons of various operating systems: The Right Operating System for YouHope that helps. ~m

Wow! Thanks for the link, definitely useful and not Gates' 'politically correct', if you know what i mean. Will have a look at it soon. My googling always shows me only things like "Vista is excellent" or "Bill the genius", and so on. Maybe i got some strange virus? ;D
