I'm sure that many of you browsing this forum, use or have used companions during your travels in Vvanderfell. Even during exploring caves and ruins, of course: because here are the Forgotten Halls of Mortrag Glacier, and we are here to discuss about fighting! Then i would to know: do you usually play companions of your same class, then i suppose with your same skills and powers, or do you prefer to join a character of an opposite class (mage if you're a warrior, and warrior if you're a mage?)? Thanks to my recent upgrade to Tribunal, i've recently played Kendra by Baratheon, and i found her pretty interesting during fighting: well, while i use my sword or my axe she cast her powerful spells, or she summon a scaring daedra (hum, at the beginning she casts only scamps in reality...); personally i like this strange kind of "wedding", sword and spells... In that way, she supply my lacks in magic, and finally allows me to see how a good mage fights, lol. That's what i like to see, and the reason why i actually prefer to play mage instead of warrior companions. But i'm sure you have other impressions to share, so please do it!

I like to have a couple companions usually one of each. I change mods so often i'm always making a new character and I've never finished the main quest. I most often have Kumiko, my ninja girl companion, she's linmited in magic but has some cast on target battle magic. I did make a companion faction, fellowship of heros, a group of vigilante do-gooders. I had some quest lines laid out but never made them. I grouped them into 3 categories, mage, marksman, and melee. As your reputation and skills increase you rise in rank and can access more companions. each rank had an archer, warrior, and a mage type you could take with you.

Well, my experience with companions is somewhat limited. I have only used Emma's (and Grumpy's) companions and just a couple days ago Kateri's Julan companion. I have companions mostly for their personality and not for help in combat...
Of Emma's companions I find Laura Craft to be the best in combat situations as she is a warrior and she can do pretty good even at lvl 1 (and she has a full suit of Ebony Armor!) Constance is nice with the bow but she requires a bit of training and equipment until you can find her own missing bow. Morgana is the most powerful (and most dangerous) of all. Her spells are VERY damaging (against you, too) and her Storm Atronach can and will smash everything in its way (including you). Julan seems to behave like Constance in combat, he stays back and shoots arrows and that is good. I find it hard to aim with arrows or magic when my companions are engaged in melee combat, but the AI doesn't seem to have a problem...

I most often have Kumiko, my ninja girl companion, she's linmited in magic but has some cast on target battle magic. I have downloaded Kumiko, can't wait to try her! Even because i'm so curious to find out if she works different from some other companion mods. Emma's companions mods were the first i knew; i still remember my first day browsing the internet looking for Morrowind mods, and "Laura Craft" or "The Witchgirl Adventure" were the first two names who hit my immagination. However, at the moment combat behaviour and AI are the things which interest much to me. Artificial Intelligence... Yeah, it's really good that Laura can afford a fighting also at level 1; but what i would to see in the future, it's a companion able to take some inititiatives by himself, without your constant click - click - click on the dialogue window. In my opinion that would be useful even in combat: sometimes, i'm a little bothered to see companions always looking at my butt, like in an escort quest... I would to see something brand new; and an improved AI could protect our PCs from companion's "friendly fire", too (especially when his / her spells are too powerful, eh eh). That's because i'm actually testing Janine , a new type of companion created for MWSE. Simply editing her script by adding some new lines included in the readme (and of course running MWSE togheter with Morrowind), seems that Janine become capable of some new features which are impossible to have with a regular scripting. Wow, that would be really great, i have to complete her testing soon! And of course i can't wait to know also your opinion about Janine; let me know what you think about her after a little test if you want. She seems able to feel the smell of enemyes before you, and that sounds nice to me, i'm already wondering about some in - game combat improvements!!! ;D

I agree with you, the "following" behavior of companions is getting a bit bothersome some times...
I would like for a change my companions to lead, especially when I am playing a mage character... Maybe a dialogue option like, "Laura honey, go charge the kaguti while I back you up with spells..." or "Constance please shoot that cliff racer over there and if he comes close I will finish it with my sword". Something like that would be good...

Yeah, right, that's what i desire! Companions who takes various initiatives by themselves and sometimes leads you in travels... Just think about how many new addons / improvements / quests could be possible playing such a companion... For example, multilevel dungeons in which you (the player) choose to go on the left, when instead your Constance / Laura / Janine or whatever suggests you to go instead on the right, or maybe just to escape out; or again, modders could use that "improved companions" to prepare quests with 3 or more different ends. Fightersguild quests, of course. That would be amazing, even if it would requires really a lot (i mean "a lot" ) of new scripting, which is always much, much time consuming. By the way, i still have to test miss redguard Janine: i must to upgrade her script to have access to the advanced MWSE functions... And as usual i'm feared to mess up something.

i have tried lots of companions of many different classes and found one thing about them all:
they get in my way
i end up hitting my companion more than my intended target and i go through them ver yquickly and die much more often, and yet when i am by myself, i do just fine

I've run into that problem with companions that get in the way -- it's mostly if they do any melee fighting. If you use a companion that sticks to ranged attacks it's a lot better, whether you're using ranged attacks or not. Give them no weapon at all except a bow and plenty of arrows, for instance, or set them to use magic. The companion tends to hang back out of the way.

im i don't really know what exactly it was because i DLed a massive mod compilation and that was one of them, it just put NPCs all over morrowind that you could befriend and have as a companion, or even partner if you want i think the mod compilation was called seaquest, but im not sure, i couldn't even find the stuff in it that i originally DLed it for until i used the CS
but there was an abundance of possible companions, when i lost one, i just went out and found another one

As far as companions are concerned, I usually use the 'Use what I use' option. I never use mages, since I never play magically-oriented characters, and I can't trust some accursed mage hurling fireballs and the like at my enemies while I am fighting them toe-to-toe! So my compainons (when, indeed, I have any) simply follow my example of shooting as the enemy advances and then charging into melee. Alterantively, I might just station an archer to guard my back while I fight melee alone. At any rate, I would almost never fight with more than one companion with me, unless a quest demaned it.
