The Colour of Air
Long ago, in the many dark caves that litters the mountains of the north, a rather odd group of humanoid creatures lived; They were known as ”Jollygoods” they had adapted quite well to the all engulfing darkness that is so often found in caves.
But even the Jollygoods had to go out of these deep dark holes in the ground sometimes, by a strange turn of evens the Jollygoods could not eat anything else than the gargantuan Vibrant Frog, and these frogs could not be found anywhere else than in a quite large swamp far to the south. Luckily, the Jollygoods only needed one frog to sustain their tribe for a whole year (Vibrant Frogs don’t rot)
Because of this, the Jollygoods went on an annual pilgrimage to the swamps of the south, it had become a tradition…..No a religious ceremony would describe it so much better, these journeys were filled with frequent prayers and chanting to the great rock in the star speckled sky(the moon in other words)
These prayers went much like this; AKKA! AKK! AKKEA! Translated this becomes; Moon and trice cursed serpent! For those of you, to uneducated to understand the meaning of this simple phrase, the Moon is their god, and the trice cursed serpent is their manifestation of evil. The serpent was cursed to circle the sky for all eternity; in millions of pieces, and sometimes the blood of the serpent fall down on earth (they believe the clouds are the serpent, and that the rain is its blood.)
But enough of Jollygood theology, I did not come here to lecture you on the sky worshiping of a group of cave dwellers. (Feel free to ask after the tale is finished though)
The phrase “AKKA! AKK! AKKEA!” could be heard over and over again, whispers, shouts, loud and clear, their puny high pitched voices scared away any predator that could lurk in the bushes, and their bright pink colour easily blinded anyone not scared away be the noise
A young Jollygood, on his first Pilgrimage of the Vibrant Frog was walking beside his father, who was busy chanting and waving around a lantern with his limbs stretched to the maximum.
Nothing out of the ordinary, but for the young Jollygood this was a very exiting moment. His name was AKKAKEA, and he would play a major role in the upcoming chain of events, despite his relatively young age.
As I have already stated, he was on his first Pilgrimage of the Vibrant Frog, they had now entered the swamps, and was closing onto the dwelling of the Vibrant Frog, it was very easy to spot, not to mention smell, as the Vibrant Frogs liked to live under the rotting carcasses of their prey.(imagine this; A huge pile of rotting flesh, bones and maggots laying on the ground, moving up and down as the frog underneath it breathes)
The Vibrant Frog was a rather easy prey, as it had a tendency to sleep most of the day, you could decapitate it, and it would not even notice. But the Jollygoods could not just kill it, they would have to do many rituals in order to avoid being cursed with diseases and pain by the trice cursed serpent (They think that the diseases they can catch from the rotting dwelling of the Vibrant Frog is actually curses)
This usually took up to 8 hours, and 8 hours it lasted! 8 grueling hours with constant chanting, AKMEAKAK! KAKAEA! AKKMKEKAK! AKMEAKA KAKAEA! AKKMEKAK! AKEAKAK! KAKAKE! AKKMKEKAK!
After these 8 hours were finished, many Jollygoods perished as a result of this ritual, the serpent had claimed its price in blood.
Now, the Jollygoods took out their spears and stabbed the Vibrant Frog, over and over again until its beautiful colourfull hide was littered with red, bloody, spear shaped holes.
And the frog finally perished, the Jollygoods cut the frog into four pieces.
One for the Great Rock in the Sky
One to avoid the wrath of the Trice Cursed Serpent
One for the rotting dwelling of the late Vibrant Frog, that would soon be inhabited by another Vibrant Frog.
And finally, one piece that they would bring home to their mountain caves.
They brought this massive chunk of meat with them home, again the air was filled with the chanting and prayers of the Jollygoods.
AKKAKEA was filled with joy and excitement, this had been his first day out of the dark deep caves, and all the colours seemed incredible to him, the hid of the vibrant frog, the green and brown colours of the swamp, the sky so blue and everflowing…..It was all so incredible! But there was one thing that seemed odd to him; Though everything seemed to have some sort of colour, the air did not! He had always thought that the air was coloured black, as it seemed to be in the dark caves he lived in. But outside, it seemed to lack an actually colour.
He decided to ask his father about it.
“AKK, KAKAKE, KAKAM, KAKKAKAK?” he said (“Father, what is the colour of the air we breathe?)
His father seemed lost in thought, this was a very complicated and deep question for the simple Jollygoods…..
“AKKAK, KAKEAK, KAKKKA, KAKKKA” His father said (Son, the colour of the air is unknown)
Disappointed, Akkakea went deeper into the dark depths of their village in the dark, he wanted to ask one of the village elders about this (they never did anything but sitting around anyways)
He wandered long and far, for the manors of the village elders lay far into the dark depths of their cave, long he wandered, deeper and deeper and deeper into the dark depths of the shadowy realm he called home, until he finally arrived in the manor of one of the village elders.(Jollygood manors is vibrant frog tents, imagine that)
The elder seemed lost in thought, just sat there with a deep, deep look in his huge green eyes.
AKKAKEA approached him, and asked the same question he had asked his father before; the village elder did to seem to react,
AKKAKEA decided to come back later, and turned his back on the elder.
But then, with a raspy, whispering voice the elder said “Ka…..Kekaka….Kmakak…..Kakemak” (No….Do not leave youngling….The colour of the air is not my secret to know….But I can tell you were to find the answers you seek)
AKKAKEA, interested in finding the answer to this great question said nothing more, and decided to listen to what the elder had to say.
“Kam, kekkaka kmek, kakakaka, kmakak, makaka, kakamakakam”
(I cannot say exactly where to find the truth, but go to the Temple of the Rock on the top of this mountain, and you will find the truth)
AKKAKEA thanked the elder for the wise response, and started packing for his journey to the top of the mountain (which involved putting Vibrant Frog meat in a sack made out of pieces of the Vibrant Frogs hide)
The Jollygood species was very well adapted to mountain hiking(they have long spidery legs ending in very strong claws)and he quickly climbed to the top of the mountain, only to realize he had climbed the wrong mountain.
He climbed down, walked to the correct mountain, and climbed all the way to the top of it, where he finally found the Temple of the Rock….That just happened to have burned down the day before.
So he climbed down, walked to another mountain, climbed to the top and got to another Temple of the Rock.
He went inside, and was just about to kneel before the statue of the Great Rock in the Sky, but someone had stolen it two days ago.
So he climbed down, walked to yet another mountain, and climbed to the top, went inside the Temple of the Rock there, kneeled before the statue, and realized he had forgotten his offering of Vibrant Frog Meat at the temple that lacked the statue.
So he climbed down, walked to the mountain with the temple that lacked it’s statue, climbed up it, got his bag of Vibrant Frog meat, climbed down, walked to the mountain he had just left, went inside the temple, kneeled before the statue, left his offering and asked; “KAKAKAKAKA AKKAK AKMAKAK AKKAKA” (Great Rock in the Sky! What is the colour of air!?)
And a booming voice rang through his small star shaped head “KAKAKAKKAKKAKAKAKAKKAKAK AKKAMAK KAMAKAKMAK KAMKAKAMAK” (The colour of the air, is all colours in one, yet no colours at all!)
He pondered on what these deep, wise words meant.
And soon he realized that the answer was simple as nothing…..
Air had no colour at all.
